The program of this trip to Nimes and the Pont du Gard
Throughout this day, I will be both your driver and guide. I will show you around Nimes and the Pont du Gard since, as an official guide, I am authorized to guide you in these places.
The amphitheater of Nimes, also called the Arena, is located in the city center.
If it is not the largest in the Roman world, it is considered that the amphitheater of Nimes is the best preserved.
After observing it from the outside, we will enter the amphitheater to discover the details and sit in the stands.
I will tell you about Roman life in Nimes, and the activities and events that took place here in the amphitheater but also the recent restorations of the monument.
A few minutes from the arena, I will take you to discover the Maison Carree - The Square House (exterior visit). This is the ancient temple located on the forum of the Roman city, which dates from the 1st century.
We will then walk through the pedestrian streets of the historic center of Nimes, to Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor cathedral.
I will give you time to have lunch in the center of Nimes, before heading to the Pont du Gard which is approximately 35 minutes away.
Located in the countryside, the Pont du Gard is the highest aqueduct bridge in the Roman world. It is nearly 50 meters high.
It is one of the works which made it possible to bring clear water from Uzes to Nimes. At this precise place, the aqueduct spans the Gardon thanks to this bridge raised on three stories.
After having presented the reasons for the Pont du Gard and the construction techniques of the Romans, I will take you to the panorama in order to enjoy the most beautiful view.
To learn more, visit Pont du Gard website.
We will then return to your starting point.
It is possible to end this excursion elsewhere than at your starting point. I can drop you off in Avignon if you wish to stay there for one or more nights.
I can also take you to Marseille, Nice, or even Lyon for example. If you are interested, contact me without delay, I will tell you the supplement to pay.
