Throughout this day, I will be both your driver and guide. I will show you around the castle of Cassan since I am authorized to guide you on the spot.
Until the French Revolution, Cassan was a priory. It took the name of Château in 1790.
People living in our area know Cassan quite poorly. The castle is not located on a busy road. This reinforces the surprise on arrival at the site.
Visit of the medieval part of Cassan

We will visit the priory church of Cassan
The church dates from the 12th century. It opens both in the 18th part of the castle and in the gardens.
It consists of a single nave, without a chapel. This forms a rather surprising nave. In 1788, the original apse with 3 chapels gave way to the current apse.
I will tell you about its particular vaulting: surprisingly wide for the time, I will explain its construction technique to you and understand which makes it a totally unusual example of Romanesque architecture.
Visit of the 18th century part of Cassan

The small library lounge of the Château de Cassan
We will visit in turn the four adjoining salons, which present an aspect of the 18th century. : the dining room (which is still used today), the large music room, the small library room and the bishops' room.
Some pieces of furniture are period pieces, others are recent but imitate the old.
The cohabitation of the classical 18th century and the Romanesque 12th century is a surprise but it forms an absolutely exquisite whole.
Walk in the gardens of the Castle of Cassan

18th century facade. from the castle of Cassan
Finally, the highlight of this tour is visible from the gardens of Cassan: the largest facade erected in the 18th century in Languedoc. It is this which gave its nickname of "Versailles" at the castle of course.
A harmonious facade 70 meters long: it is both splendid and so unexpected in our region.
It was erected between 1754 and 1758.
If you like architecture, this facade alone is worth a visit.
